Censorship and the effects it has:
When something is censored it affects more than the author or the reader. The affects of censorship can be seen in classrooms by students and teachers, by librarians, by authors, readers, and publishers.
Effects on Authors and Readers:
One on the biggest impacts censorship has on the authors and readers of the literature. The reason for this is that when a authors work is censored they are supporessing the ideas and opinions of the author. This then affects the reader because they are now restricted from accessing free ideas and opinions. They are limited by the views and beliefs of one person.
Publishers:
Publishers are put in a precarious position in regards to censorship. Publishers want to publish things that will be read and they usually do so with certain restrictions in mind. When you bring censorship into the picture publishers really take the hardest hit. Publishers spend so much money fighting censorship claims and then they are also getting bad publicity in regards to the book that many small publishers could fold from fighting just one censorship battle. Publishers are censored in the aspect that they restrict what they publish in an attempt to avoid possible bannings. This has also affected authors because they may not get published and have even resulted in publishing themselves.
Effects on Librarians:
One of the hardest parts of being a librarian is when books are censored. The reason this is so difficult is because when something is deemed "taboo" it then becomes the librarians job to restrict this information and make sure it doesn't get into their library. They are required to stand guard at the gate on top of all their other job duties. Also most librarians believe that books should not be censored so they have to follow guidelines that are against their own beliefs.
Students and Teachers:
One of the greatest injustice is the fact that books are banned in schools. The effects of banning books can last the lifetime of the student. When literature is banned in it is basically leaving a gap in their education as well as their lives. When books and text books regarding sex are so watered down they are practically a disney movie the point of sex education is non existent. And yet our teenage pregnancy rates still rise each year. Also when they take out the violence of history they are doing an injustice to the growth of civilization as well as providing a low quality education.
This affects the teachers as well as the students. They have to decide how to teach vitally important subjects like the holocaust and slavery, yet books like The Diary of Anne Frank are challenged and banned. Teachers are struggling to find adequate materials and have even been forced to skip over subjects because there is no way to teach them.
